Wheat Weed Control
The recent rains should give the 2007 wheat crop
a running start. However, fall moisture brings the possibility of winter
annuals that can compete with your crop for nutrients and moisture.
Broadleaf weeds such as mustards often emerge in the fall and winter,
but rarely require treatment until the spring. All the SU (sulfonylurea) products do a good job of controlling these weeds; we can help you pick the right one for your crop rotation.

If you need a topdress fertilizer application in the
spring, all these herbicides can be tank mixed with our popular
High-NRG N®.
Grass weeds like jointed goatgrass and downy brome (cheat grass) are
harder to control: they can emerge in either the fall or spring, and the
timing of herbicide applications becomes more critical. The product of
choice for jointed goatgrass and downy brome control is BASF's
Beyond®, but it can only used on Clearfield® wheat.
Clearfield® is a non-GMO cultivar with several wheat
varieties available.
Beyond™ should be applied to
small, actively growing weeds, when they have 3-4 leaves. To get
residual control for later flushes, rainfall or irrigation is required
after application.
If you don’t have Clearfield® wheat, Olympus®
(or
Olympus Flex®) from Bayer has shown promising results on downy
brome, although it only has a suppression label on jointed goatgrass.
The best timing is when most of the first flush of downy brome has
emerged and is actively growing, but is no larger than 2-3 tillers. This
will likely be mid-October and mid-November. For control of later
flushes, about 1/2" of rainfall or irrigation is required after
application.
It is important to remember that these products can do a good job of
reducing heavy grass pressure if conditions are good, but they will
almost certainly not give 100% control.

Corn Insect Review
The biggest news in 2006 was the dramatic price decrease in Capture®
and products with the same active ingredient, bifenthrin. This
mid-season price reduction change made spider mite, ECB and rootworm
beetle control much more economical, and the short 12 hour re-entry
period (REI) was also a benefit.
The negative news is that Furadan® (used for rootworm control) is
under an EPA
re-registration review, called IRED, and some uses may be
discontinued--we'll keep you posted.
Fall Pasture Treatments
Fall is the best time to spray for musk
thistle. We
will be using
Milestone® this year. If there are trees nearby, we like to wait
until the leaves have fallen to avoid damage. Please bring us maps with
the critical areas marked, and we'll treat where you have indicated.
Milestone™ is new chemistry: click here for a popup with more
information.
Thank You!
