Mustard in Wheat

Winter annual weeds, primarily yellow mustard, are growing in some wheat fields. Other fields are weed free, but have spotty stands which might host summer annual weeds later in the growing season.

What should you do?

     • Fields with growing mustard can be treated anytime up to the boot stage, but early treatment reduces yield loss. Chemical choices change after the joint stage, but mustard can still be controlled.

     • Fields without mustard but with thin stands may be treated now, prior to jointing, with dicamba (Banvel) in the tank mix to control sulfonylurea-resistant kochia. If you wait until the wheat joints, you should delay treatment until the summer annuals (kochia and Russian thistle) emerge, but you should treat prior to boot stage.

DuPont is actively promoting its newest wheat herbicide, Ally Extra, for mustard control. Ally Extrais a mixture of Ally and Harmony Extra™.

Ally Extra
is priced--at the 0.2 ounce rate--to compete with metsulfuron (generic Ally) while providing superior mustard control. At the 0.2 ounce rate, you get less residual and no Crop Protection Plus from DuPont.

If you opt for the 0.3 ounce rate--about 75 cents per acre more--you get longer residual control and the Crop Protection Plus program.

What is Crop Protection Plus? If your wheat is unharvestable for any reason, DuPont will refund the cost of their herbicide.

We normally include 2,4-D and dicamba in our pre-joint mustard treatments, and we never leave tracks.

All residual herbicides need precipitation after treatment for incorporation. The recent snowfall over the tri-state area should provide adequate soil moisture for control of existing weeds.

We can tank mix topdress fertilizer with the herbicide application. Please see below for more information on topdress.

Premium Topdress: High NRG-N

High NRG N Logo If you plan to topdress your wheat, we have a supply of High NRG-N on hand. We filled our tanks last fall when it was cheaper, and we are passing the savings on to you. High NRG-N is a premium product: a 27% Nitrogen plus 1% Sulfur mixture (27-0-0-1). High NRG-N contains an extensive combination of micronutrients which are readily available to the plant. Additionally, leaf burn is nearly eliminated due to the low salt formulation.

Agro-Culture's High NRG-N is a proven product with many years of research and field testing.

More information on High NRG-N is available at www.agroliquid.com.

As Agro-Culture says, "This is not your grandfather's fertilizer."

Furadan for Corn Rootworm

moneyPrices are lower this year for FMC's Furadan  for corn rootworm control. FMC now allows the $3/acre rebate to be deducted from the application price, so there is no waiting until fall for a rebate check.

Don't forget that a Furadan application also provides protection against 1st generation corn borers.
