Milestone™
is a rare thing: new chemistry in a pasture weed herbicide. Growth
regulator
herbicides like 2,4-D have been around for more than half a century, but
Milestone™ is based upon a
chemical class known as pyridines."Milestone™ herbicide, containing the active ingredient aminopyralid, was brought to market by Dow Agro Sciences," says Dennis Epplin, University of Illinois Extension crop systems educator. "It is a grass pasture herbicide but also has a label for other uses such as CRP and non-cropland weed management. . ." Milestone™ will provide control on a variety of annual broadleaf leaves. It is effective on musk, bull, and Canada thistle. There are no grazing or haying restrictions for any class of dairy or livestock with Milestone™. However, Milestone™ may persist in the manure and urine of animals feeding on treated forage, so animals should be allowed to graze on untreated pastures for three days before being transferred to areas where sensitive broadleaf crops occur. Do not spread manure from animals that have grazed or consumed forage from treated areas within the previous three days on land used for growing susceptible broadleaf crops. A single application will probably not provide long-term control of an established infestation. Milestone™ is one tool in an effective pasture management plan. |
